How to use the glossary

Casino content is full of shorthand, and the same idea often goes by several names. This glossary defines each term in one or two plain sentences and links to a fuller explanation where one exists. If you only learn a few entries, make them house edge, RTP and volatility — they unlock almost everything else.

A few key terms

House edge: the casino’s average long-run margin on a bet. RTP (return to player): the percentage of stakes returned to players over time, the inverse of house edge. Volatility: how evenly a game’s wins are distributed. Wagering requirement: how many times a bonus must be staked before winnings can be withdrawn. Provably fair: a cryptographic method, common in crypto casinos, that lets players verify a result was not tampered with.

Frequently asked questions

What does RTP mean?

Return to player — the long-run percentage of money wagered that a game pays back to players, the mirror image of the house edge.

What is a wagering requirement?

A condition on bonuses requiring you to stake the bonus (and sometimes the deposit) a set number of times before you can withdraw any winnings from it.
