What basic strategy is
Basic strategy is a complete decision chart: for every combination of your hand and the dealer’s visible card, it tells you whether to hit, stand, double or split. It was derived by computing the long-run expected value of each option. Following it perfectly squeezes the house edge down to around half a percent under common rules — far better than playing on instinct.
What it can and can't do
Basic strategy minimises the edge; it does not flip the game in your favour or guarantee a winning session. It also depends on the table rules — number of decks, whether the dealer hits soft 17, and crucially whether blackjack pays 3:2 or 6:5 (a 6:5 table roughly triples the edge).
