The studio that started the industry
Microgaming was founded on the Isle of Man in 1994 and claims to have built the software behind the first true online casino that same year. Whatever the exact precedence — rival claims exist — it was unquestionably one of the two or three companies that created the online casino industry, and for two decades its Viper platform and enormous game catalogue powered a large share of all internet casinos. It also co-founded eCOGRA, the independent testing agency, in 2003, an early move in fairness certification that shaped how the regulated industry still works.
Mega Moolah and the progressive jackpot network
Microgaming’s most famous creation is Mega Moolah (2006), the safari-themed progressive slot whose pooled jackpot network linked players across hundreds of casinos into one prize pool. Its Mega jackpot seeds at one million and has repeatedly broken records for the largest online slot payouts ever recorded, including multi-million wins verified by Guinness World Records. Beyond jackpots, the classic catalogue includes Immortal Romance and Thunderstruck II — story-driven slots from the early 2010s that remain in casino lobbies today.
The Games Global era
In 2022 Microgaming sold its games portfolio and distribution business to Games Global, a Malta-headquartered company created for the purpose. Games Global now operates the catalogue — more than 3,000 titles — through a network of over 40 partner studios such as Triple Edge Studios, Just For The Win and Stormcraft, which develop exclusively for its platform. For players the practical change is branding: games historically labelled Microgaming now carry the Games Global name, while the jackpot network and classic titles continue to run. Microgaming itself continues as a separate business focused on platform services.
